Therefore thus says the Lord: Behold, I will lay stumbling blocks before this people, and the fathers and the sons together will fall upon them. The neighbor and his friend will perish.

So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans from Babylon, who killed their young men with the sword at the house of their sanctuary. He did not spare a young man or virgin, old or aged. God gave all of them into his hand.

He shall become a sanctuary, but a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, and a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Many among them shall stumble and fall and be broken and be snared and be taken.

I will dash them against one another, even the fathers and the sons together, says the Lord. I will not show pity or spare or have mercy, but will destroy them.

Give glory to the Lord your God, before He causes darkness and before your feet stumble on the dark mountains, and while you look for light, He turns it into the shadow of death and makes it gross darkness.

Therefore, deliver up their children to the famine and pour out their blood by the power of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children and become widows and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle.

Yet, Lord, You know all their counsel against me to slay me. Do not forgive their iniquity nor blot out their sin from Your sight; but let them be overthrown before You; deal thus with them in the time of Your anger.

Afterwards, says the Lord, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people and such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their life. And he will strike them with the edge of the sword. He will not spare them or have pity or mercy.

Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? They were not at all ashamed, nor could they blush. Therefore they will fall among those who fall; in the time of their punishment they will be cast down, says the Lord.

Again, when a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die. Because you have not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered. But his blood I will require at your hand.

Therefore the fathers shall eat their sons in your midst, and the sons shall eat their fathers. I will execute judgments on you, and the whole remnant of you will I scatter into all the winds.

They shall fall one upon one another, as to escape before the sword, though no one pursues, and you shall have no power to stand before your enemies.

And David says: “Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution to them.

As it is written: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, and whoever believes in Him will not be ashamed.”

and, “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble, because they are disobedient to the word, to which also they were appointed.
