Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malkijah the son of Hammelech that was in the court of the prison, and they let Jeremiah down with cords. And in the cistern there was no water, only mud, so Jeremiah sank in the mud.

And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty, and there was no water in it.

So they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.

He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps.

I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood overflows me.

For then the king of Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the house of the king of Judah.

But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the Lord hid them.

For Jeremiah had entered the dungeon, that is, the vaulted cell, and Jeremiah had remained there many days.

Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison and give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city was finished. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Then they drew Jeremiah up with cords and took him up out of the cistern, and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Behold, all the women who are left in the house of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officers of the king of Babylon; and those women shall say: ‘Your friends have misled and prevailed against you; while your feet were sunk in the mud, they turned back.’

Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spoke and said to Daniel, “Your God whom you serve continually, He will deliver you.”

And as for you, because of the blood of your covenant, I will send your prisoners from the empty, waterless pits.

Having received such an order, he threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.

For you need patience, so that after you have done the will of God, you will receive the promise.
