Then Zedekiah the king said, “Behold, he is in your hand, for the king cannot do anything against you.”

did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, so that I kept silence, and did not go out of the door?

So the couriers ran from city to city in the land of Ephraim and Manasseh and up to Zebulun, but the people laughed at them and mocked them.

When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly irritated, and he mocked the Jews.

O  Lord, You have deceived me and I was deceived; You are stronger than I and have prevailed. I am held in derision daily; everyone mocks me.
