Thus says the Lord: The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness, when I went to give Israel rest.

But He led forth His own people like sheep and guided them in the wilderness like a flock;

Therefore I swore in My wrath, “They shall not enter My rest.”

and he said, “When you perform the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the stools, if it is a son, then you must kill him, but if it is a daughter, then she may live.”

Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, “You must cast every son that is born into the river, and you must preserve every daughter’s life.”

Then the Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Sukkoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides children.

In the passing of time, the king of Egypt died. And the Israelites sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out, and their cry came up to God on account of the bondage.

And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

And they said to them, “May the Lord look on you and judge, because you have made our scent stink in the estimation of Pharaoh and in the estimation of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.”

Go and proclaim in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus says the Lord: I remember you, the kindness of your youth, the love of your espousals, when you followed Me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.

I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there I will enter into judgment with you face to face.

I drew them with cords of human kindness, with bands of love. I was to them as those who ease the yoke on their neck, and I bent down and fed them.

They set out three days from the mountain of the Lord, and the ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them the three days’ journey, to find a resting place for them.

The Lord said, “I have forgiven according to your word.

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

The Lord your God who goes before you, He shall fight for you, just as all that He did for you in Egypt before your eyes,

who went in the way before you, to find you a place to pitch your tents, in fire by night and in a cloud by day, to show you by what way you should go.

For you have not yet come to the rest and to the inheritance which the Lord your God has given you.

“For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the works of your hands. He knows your wanderings through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.”

who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might prove you, to do good for you in the end.

“Remember the word that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you: ‘The Lord your God has given you a place for rest and will give this land.’
