Jeremiah 19:1

Thus says the Lord: Go and buy a potter’s earthen bottle, and take some of the elders of the people and some of the elders of the priests.

He sent Eliakim, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz.

He shall break it as the breaking of the potter’s vessel that is broken in pieces; He shall not spare so that there shall not be found in the breaking of it a shard to take fire from the hearth or with which to take water out of a cistern.

Thus says the Lord to me, “Go and buy yourself a linen waistband and put it upon your loins, and do not put it in water.”

Then certain of the elders of the land rose up and spoke to all the assembly of the people, saying:

Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: Take these deeds, this sealed deed of purchase and this deed which is open, and put them in an earthen vessel that they may last many days.

The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, how they are esteemed as earthen pots, the work of a potter’s hands!

You also, son of man, take a brick and lay it before you and inscribe a city on it, even Jerusalem.

“As for you, son of man, take a sharp sword. Take and cause it to pass upon your head and upon your beard as a barber’s razor. Then take balances to weigh and divide the hair.

Utterly slay old and young, both maidens and little children, and women. But do not touch any man on whom is the mark. And begin at My sanctuary.” Then they began with the elders who were before the temple.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Gather to Me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people, and officers over them, and bring them to the tent of meeting, that they may take a stand there with you.

Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,

When the morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put Him to death.

When he had arrived, he took Paul’s belt and bound his own hands and feet, saying, “The Holy Spirit says, ‘In this manner the Jews at Jerusalem shall bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’ ”

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, the excellency of the power being from God and not from ourselves.
