The lyre and the harp, the tambourine and pipe, and wine are in their feasts; but they do not regard the deeds of the Lord, or consider the work of His hands.

Why did you flee away secretly and sneak away from me and not tell me? I would have sent you away with joy and with songs, with the tambourine and harp.

I am now eighty years old. Can I discern what is pleasant from what is harmful? Can your servant taste what I eat and what I drink? Can I still hear the voices of men and women who sing? Why, then, should your servant be a burden to my lord the king?

Because they do not regard the works of the Lord, nor the work of His hands, He will destroy them and not build them up.

Behold, there is joy and gladness, slaying of oxen and killing of sheep, eating of meat and drinking wine: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die.”

The joy of tambourines ceases, the noise of those who rejoice ends, the joy of the harp ceases.

Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city where David lived! Add year to year, observe your feasts on schedule.

who say, “Let Him make speed and hasten His work, that we may see it; and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw near and come, that we may know it!”

“Come,” they say, “let us get wine, and let us fill ourselves with strong drink; and tomorrow shall be as today, only more so.”

I will cause the noise of your songs to cease. And the sound of your harps shall be heard no more.

but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven. And they have brought the vessels of His house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine in them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know. And the God in whose hand is your breath, and whose are all your ways, you have not glorified.

“There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.

Even when things without life give sound, whether flute or harp, how will it be known what is played unless they give a distinction in the sounds?

These are the ones who are stains on your love feasts as they feast with you irreverently and care only for themselves. They are clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, uprooted;

Fear the Lord; serve Him in truth with all your heart, and consider what great things He has done for you.
