I said: In the middle of my days, I shall go to the gates of Sheol; I am to be deprived of the rest of my years.

“What strength do I have, that I should hope? And what is my end, that I should prolong my life?

Oh, remember that my life is a breath! My eye will never again see good.

I said, “O my God, do not take me away in the midst of my days; Your years endure throughout all generations.”

Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands.

They abhorred all manner of food, and they drew near to the gates of death.

Oh, love the Lord, all you His saints! The Lord preserves the faithful, but fully repays the one who acts in pride.

Whatever your hands find to do, do with your strength; for there is no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol where you are going.

In those days Hezekiah was mortally ill. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, came to him and said to him, “Thus says the Lord: Set your house in order, for you shall die, and not live.”

This is the writing of Hezekiah king of Judah after his illness and recovery:

I went down to the foundations of the mountains; the earth with its bars was around me forever; yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O  Lord my God.

We had the sentence of death in ourselves, so that we would not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead.
