Isaiah 31:1

Modern English Version

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, and rely on horses, and trust in chariots because they are many, and in horsemen because they are very strong, but they do not look to the Holy One of Israel nor seek the Lord!

They brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for the horses, the flocks, the herds, and the donkeys; and he fed them with food in exchange for all their livestock for that year.

And at that time Hanani the seer came to King Asa of Judah saying, “Because you depended on the king of Aram and did not depend on the Lord your God, therefore the army of the king of Aram escaped from your hand.

For the eyes of the Lord move about on all the earth to strengthen the heart that is completely toward Him. You have acted foolishly in this, and from this point forward you will have wars.”

Will you trust him because his strength is great? Or will you leave your labor to him?

Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

The light of Israel shall be a fire, and his Holy One a flame, and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day,

Their land also is full of silver and gold, and there is no end to their treasures; their land is also full of horses, and there is no end to their chariots.

Then they shall be dismayed and ashamed of Cush their hope and Egypt their boast.

You also made a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the old pool. But you have not looked to its maker, nor did you respect Him who fashioned it long ago.

and you said, “No, for we will flee on horses”; therefore you shall flee. “And we will ride on swift horses”; therefore those who pursue you shall be swift.

Behold, you trust in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who rely on him.

How then will you turn away one captain of the least of my master’s servants and rely on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

I am the Lord, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King.

The lyre and the harp, the tambourine and pipe, and wine are in their feasts; but they do not regard the deeds of the Lord, or consider the work of His hands.

You went to the king with ointment, and increased your perfumes, and sent your messengers far off, and made them go down to Sheol.

There is no one who calls on Your name, who stirs up himself to take hold of You; for You have hidden Your face from us and have consumed us because of our iniquities.

The Arameans shall be before and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open jaws. For all this His anger is not turned away, and His hand is stretched out still.

For the people do not turn to Him who struck them, nor do they seek the Lord of Hosts.

Thus says the Lord: Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, and whose heart departs from the Lord.

For My people have committed two evils. They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Thus you shall say to the king of Judah who sent you to Me to inquire of Me: Behold, Pharaoh’s army which has come out to help you shall return to Egypt, to its own land.

saying, ‘No, but we will go into the land of Egypt where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger for bread, and there we will dwell,’

But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? Shall he escape who does such things? Can he indeed break the covenant and be delivered?

It shall be the confidence of the house of Israel no more, bringing to mind the iniquity of their having turned to Egypt. But they shall know that I am the Lord God.

As it is written in the Law of Moses, great calamity has come on us. Yet we have not sought the favor of the Lord our God so that we might turn from our iniquities and give attention to Your truth.

He will return to the land of Egypt, and Assyria will be his king, because they refused to return to Me.

I will not execute the fierceness of My anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim. For I am God, and not man, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath.

Assyria will not save us, we will not ride on horses. We will no longer say, ‘Our God,’ to the work of our hands. In You the orphan finds mercy.”

They are all hot as an oven, and they devour their judges. All their kings have fallen, and none of them calls to Me.

Are You not from everlasting, O  Lord my God, my Holy One? We will not die. O  Lord, You have appointed them for judgment; and You, O rock, have established them for correction.

God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran.    Selah His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of His praise.

And they will be as mighty men, who trample down in the muddy streets in battle. They will fight because the Lord is with them, and He will put to shame those riding on horses.

What is more, he shall not accumulate horses for himself or cause the people to return to Egypt in order that he accumulate horses, for as the Lord has said to you, “You must not go back that way ever again.”

When you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses, and chariots, and a people that outnumber you, do not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
