For behold, the Lord, the Lord of Hosts, takes away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stock and the store, the whole supply of bread, and the whole supply of water;

On the ninth day of the fourth month the famine was severe in the city, and there was no food for the people of the land.

Moreover He called for a famine upon the land; He broke the whole supply of bread.

Therefore the Lord, the Lord of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, says: Ah, I will get relief from My adversaries, and avenge Myself on My enemies.

Cease regarding man, whose breath is in his nostrils; for why should he be esteemed?

Moreover the Lord says: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet,

But the Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you to speak these words? Has he not sent me to the men who sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”

Therefore My people go into captivity because they have no knowledge; and their honorable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.

Thus says your Lord, the Lord, and your God who pleads the cause of His people: Behold, I have taken out of your hand the cup of reeling, even the dregs of the cup of My fury; you will never drink it again.

They shall snatch on the right hand, but still be hungry; and they shall eat on the left hand, and shall not be satisfied; every man shall eat the flesh of his own arm.

Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison and give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city was finished. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

“My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet whom they have cast into the cistern. And he will die by hunger in the place where he is, for there is no more bread in the city.”

Through the anger of the Lord this came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah until He had cast them out from His presence. Then Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

In the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month, the famine was so severe in the city that there was no bread for the people of the land.

We must pay for the water we drink; our wood is sold to us.

Son of man, when the land sins against Me by trespassing grievously, then I will stretch out My hand against it, and break the staff of the bread, and send famine against it, and cut off man and beast from it.

When I have broken the supply of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall ration your bread again by weight, and you shall eat and not be satisfied.

Though I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities and lack of food in all your places, yet you did not return to Me, says the Lord.

Now why do you cry loudly? Have you no king? Has your counselor perished, that agony has seized you like the woman in labor?
