Isaiah 28:19

Modern English Version

As often as it passes through, it shall seize you; for morning by morning it shall pass through, anytime by day or night. It shall be terror only to understand the report.

In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria seized Samaria and exiled Israel to Assyria. He put them in Halah, in Habor by the River of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.

therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing evil on Jerusalem and Judah, such evil that the ears of whoever hears about it will tingle.

The Lord sent against him bands of Chaldeans, bands of Arameans, bands of Moabites, and bands of Ammonites. He sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord that He spoke by His servants the prophets.

Terrors will make him afraid on every side and will drive him to his feet.

For the morning is the same to them as the shadow of death; if someone recognizes them, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death.

Behold, any hope of overcoming him is in vain; shall not one be overwhelmed at the sight of him?

For the arrows of the Almighty are within me; my spirit drinks in their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me.

My heart is in anguish within me, and the terrors of death have fallen upon me.

Afflicted and close to death since my youth, I suffer Your terrors; I am helpless.

Behold, their valiant ones cry in the streets; the ambassadors of peace weep bitterly.

Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.

They said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah: This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy, for children have come to birth, and there is no strength to bring them forth.

The Lord God has given me the tongue of the learned, that I may know how to sustain him who is weary with a word; He awakens me morning by morning; He awakens my ear to listen as the learned.

and say: Hear the word of the Lord, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will bring such disaster upon this place, at which whoever hears of it, his ears shall tingle.

Declare in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say: Blow the trumpet in the land. Cry aloud and say, “Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the fortified cities.”

It shall come to pass in that day, says the Lord, that the heart of the king will fail and the heart of the officials; and the priests will be astonished and the prophets will wonder.

“We have heard the report of it; our hands grow feeble. Anguish has taken hold of us, and pain as of a woman in labor.

You have invited as to a feast day the terrors all around; in the day of the Lord’s anger no one escaped or survived; those whom I held and raised my enemy destroyed.

At this point the matter ended. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts troubled me much, and my countenance changed in me, but I kept the matter in my heart.

Then I, Daniel, fainted and was sick for some days. Afterward I rose up again and did the king’s business. So I was astonished at the vision, but there was none to explain it.

I heard, and my body trembled; my lips quivered at the sound; rottenness entered my bones; my legs tremble beneath me. Yet I will wait quietly for the day when calamity comes on the people invading us.

The Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am doing something in Israel which will make both ears ring of everyone who hears it.
