Like a stubborn heifer, Israel is stubborn. Now will the Lord feed them like a lamb in a wide pasture?

and that they may not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not set its heart aright, whose spirit was not faithful to God.

He will surely violently turn and toss you like a ball into a large country; there you shall die, and there the chariots of your glory shall be the shame of your lord’s house.

Then He shall give you rain for the seed which you shall sow in the ground and bread of the increase of the earth. And it shall be rich and plentiful. On that day your cattle shall feed in large pastures.

Then the lambs shall feed in their pasture, and strangers shall eat in the waste places of the wealthy.

O  Lord, though our iniquities testify against us, do it for Your name’s sake. Indeed, our backslidings are many; we have sinned against You.

The Lord said to me: Backsliding Israel has proved herself more righteous than treacherous Judah.

The Lord said also to me in the days of Josiah the king: Have you seen that which backsliding Israel has done? She has gone up on every high mountain and under every green tree, and there has played the harlot.

I saw that for all the adulteries of backsliding Israel, I had put her away and given her a bill of divorce. Yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but went and played the harlot also.

I have surely heard Ephraim pleading: “You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as an untrained calf; turn me back and I will be turned, for you are the Lord my God.

Therefore a lion out of the forest will slay them, and a wolf from the deserts will destroy them; a leopard will watch over their cities. Everyone who goes out from there will be torn in pieces, because their transgressions are many and their backslidings have increased.

But they did not listen, nor incline their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward and not forward.

Why then is this people of Jerusalem turned away by a perpetual backsliding? They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return.

Ephraim is a trained heifer that loves to thresh grain, but I harnessed her fair neck; I will make Ephraim pull a plow. Judah will plow; Jacob shall furrow for himself.

The sword slashes in their cities, consumes their oracle-priests, and devours because of their own counsels.

My people are bent on backsliding from Me. Though they called to the Most High, none at all exalt Him.

I will scatter you among the nations and I will draw out a sword after you. And your land shall be desolate and your cities a waste.

But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder, and stopped their ears so that they should not hear.

“I regret that I have set up Saul to be king because he has turned back from following Me, and he has not carried out My words.” And it grieved Samuel, and he cried to the Lord all night.
