For I am raising up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation which marches through the breadth of the earth, to possess dwelling places that are not theirs.

In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant for three years. Then he turned and rebelled against him.

The Lord sent against him bands of Chaldeans, bands of Arameans, bands of Moabites, and bands of Ammonites. He sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord that He spoke by His servants the prophets.

So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans from Babylon, who killed their young men with the sword at the house of their sanctuary. He did not spare a young man or virgin, old or aged. God gave all of them into his hand.

And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against him and bound him in bronze chains to lead him to Babylon.

Behold the land of the Chaldeans; this was a people who was not; Assyria founded it for those who dwell in the wilderness. They set up their siege towers, they stripped its palaces, and brought it to ruin.

Lift up your eyes and see those who come from the north. Where is the flock that was given to you, your beautiful flock?

Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands with which you fight against the king of Babylon and against the Chaldeans who besiege you outside the walls; and I will assemble them into the midst of this city.

Afterwards, says the Lord, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people and such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their life. And he will strike them with the edge of the sword. He will not spare them or have pity or mercy.

behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, says the Lord, and Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, and will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations; I will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, a hissing, and perpetual desolations.

For thus says the Lord: I have heard a sound of trembling, of fear, and not of peace.

At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem: A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of My people, not to fan or to cleanse,

Set up the standard toward Zion. Seek refuge, do not delay. For I will bring disaster from the north, and a great destruction.

For this gird yourself with sackcloth, lament and howl. For the fierce anger of the Lord is not turned back from us.

Behold, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, says the Lord. It is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language you do not know, nor do you understand what they say.

Therefore I will give their wives to others, and their fields to those who shall inherit them. For everyone from the least even to the greatest is given to covetousness; from the prophet even to the priest everyone deals falsely.

They shall also bring up a company against you, and they shall stone you with stones, and thrust you through with their swords.

I will pour out My indignation upon you; I will blow against you in the fire of My wrath, and deliver you into the hand of cruel men, skilled in destruction.

therefore, behold, I will bring strangers upon you, the most cruel of the nations; and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom, and defile your brightness.

Foreigners, the tyrants of the nations have cut it off and left it. Upon the mountains and in all the valleys its branches have fallen, and its boughs have been broken by all the rivers of the land. And all the peoples of the earth have gone down from its shadow and have left it.

Before them fire devours, and behind them a flame blazes; the land is like the garden of Eden before them, but behind them a desolate wasteland, and nothing escapes them.
