Genesis 42:38

But Jacob said, “My son must not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If harm should happen to him on the journey you are to make, then you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.”

He knew it and said, “It is my son’s coat. A wild beast has devoured him. Joseph has without a doubt been torn into pieces.”

Jacob tore his clothes and put sackcloth on his waist and mourned for his son many days.

All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. And he said, “For I will go down into the grave mourning for my son.” So his father wept for him.

They said, “Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan, and behold, the youngest is with our father today, and one is no longer living.”

And we said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a young brother, the child of his old age. His brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.’

We said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, his father would die.’

Do the right thing according to your wisdom, and do not let his gray head go down to the grave in peace.

He leaves a shining wake behind him; one would think the deep had white hair.

Now also when I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your might to this generation, and Your power to everyone who is to come.

The years of our life are seventy, or even, by reason of strength, eighty; yet their span is but toil and sorrow; they soon pass away, and we fly away.

I have seen everything that is done under the sun; and behold, everything is vanity and like chasing the wind.

To the person who is pleasing before Him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy, but to the one who sins, He gives the task to gather and collect, to give to the other person who is pleasing before God. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.

I said: In the middle of my days, I shall go to the gates of Sheol; I am to be deprived of the rest of my years.

And even to your old age I am He, and even to your graying years I will carry you; I have done it, and I will bear you; I will carry, and will deliver you.
