Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, “For God,” he said, “has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s house.”

However, there will arise after them seven years of famine. All the abundance will be forgotten in the land of Egypt, and the famine will consume the land.

Before the years of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On, bore to him.

The name of the second he called Ephraim, saying, “For God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.”

After this, Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is ill.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim with him.

“Now your two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine.

because you will forget misery, and remember it as waters that pass away,

You have turned my mourning into dancing; You have taken off my sackcloth and girded me with gladness,

For His anger endures but for a moment; His favor is for a lifetime; weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes in the morning.

Listen, O daughter, consider and incline your ear; forget your own people and your father’s house,

let him drink and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

For I will not contend forever, nor will I always be angry; for the spirit would grow faint before Me, and the souls whom I have made.

because he who is blessed in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he who swears in the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten and because they are hidden from My eyes.

The sons of Joseph according to their families, by Manasseh and Ephraim, were:

His glory is like the firstborn of his bull, and his horns are like the horns of a wild ox; with them he will push the peoples together to the ends of the earth; they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh.

The descendants of Joseph were two tribes: Manasseh and Ephraim. They did not give territory to the Levites in the land, but only towns in which to live, along with the pastures, livestock, and property.

Then allotment was made to the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph. To Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, were allotted Gilead and Bashan, because he was a warrior.

In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. And she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked him of the Lord.”
