There is none greater in this house than I. He has kept nothing back from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?”
But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.”
And God said to him in a dream, “Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart, for I also kept you from sinning against Me. Therefore, I did not let you touch her.
Then Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? How have I offended you that you would bring on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done things to me that should not have been done.”
When the time of mourning was concluded, David sent for her and brought her to his house. She became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done was displeasing to the Lord.
The former governors preceding me had extracted a heavy burden on the people, because they took from them food and wine, besides forty shekels of silver. Moreover, even their servants domineered over the people. But I myself never did so, because of the fear of God.
Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You are justified when you speak, and blameless when You pass judgment.
And I find more bitter than death a woman whose heart is like snares and nets, whose hands are like prison cells. He who pleases God escapes her, but the sinner is captured by her.
Therefore thus says the Lord: Behold, I will cast you from off the face of the earth. This year you shall die, because you have taught rebellion against the Lord.”
All who found them have devoured them, and their adversaries said, “We are not guilty, because they have sinned against the Lord, the habitation of justice, even the Lord, the hope of their fathers.”
If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife, even he who commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.
If a person sins and commits a trespass against the Lord by lying to his neighbor concerning something left in storage or entrusted to him, or about a theft, or if he has extorted from his neighbor,
But he who unknowingly committed acts worthy of punishment shall be beaten with few stripes. For to whom much is given, of him much shall be required. And from him to whom much was entrusted, much will be asked.
But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the abominable, the murderers, the sexually immoral, the sorcerers, the idolaters, and all liars shall have their portion in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone. This is the second death.”
