That which was torn by beasts I did not bring to you. I bore the loss of it. You required it from my hand whether it was stolen by day or stolen by night.

“This twenty years I have been with you. Your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried their young, and the male goats of your flock I have not eaten.

It was like this with me: In the day the heat consumed me and the frost by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes.

You will be holy men to Me; therefore you must not eat any flesh that is torn by beasts in the field. You must throw it to the dogs.

For any kind of trespass, whether it be for an ox, for a donkey, for a sheep, for clothing, or for any type of lost thing, where another says it is his, the case of both parties shall come before the judges. And whoever the judges find guilty will pay double to his neighbor.

That which dies of itself or is torn by animals he shall not eat, becoming unclean by it: I am the Lord.

And in the same area there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.
