He called the name of that place Bethel, but previously the name of the city was called Luz.

From there he continued on to a mountain to the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.

He came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of that place and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.

I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar, where you vowed a vow to Me. Now arise, and get out of this land, and return to the land of your family.’ ”

Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, dwell there, and there make an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”

Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He had spoken with him, a pillar of stone, and he poured out a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it.

So Jacob called the name of the place where God had spoken with him Bethel.

So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him.

There he built an altar and called the place El-bethel, because God had appeared to him there when he fled from his brother.

Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me,

Elijah said to Elisha, “Tarry here, I ask you, for the Lord has sent me to Bethel.” But Elisha said to him, “As the Lord lives, and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.

And Abijah chased after Jeroboam and captured cities from him: Bethel, Jeshanah, and Ephron with their surrounding villages.

It goes out from Bethel to Luz and passes to the border of Arkite territory at Ataroth.

The border passes from there southward toward Luz, to the slope of Luz (that is, Bethel), and descends to Ataroth Addar on the hill south of lower Beth-horon.

He took about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, westward of the city.

Then all the Israelites, all the people, went up to Bethel where they wept and sat before the Lord. They fasted that day until evening and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.

“Then you will go forward from there, and you will come to the plain of Tabor. And there you will meet three men going up to God to Bethel: one carrying three kids, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine.

He went annually in a circuit to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpah. And he judged Israel in all those places.
