Then Jacob said, “Swear to me this day.” So he swore to him, and he sold his birthright to Jacob.

and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live.

Esau said, “Behold, I am about to die; of what use is the birthright to me?”

Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew. Then he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.

And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”

lest there be any sexually immoral or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.

For men indeed swear by a greater authority than themselves, and for them an oath of confirmation ends all dispute.
