These are the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands and in their nations.

These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, in their nations. From these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.

From these the coastlands of the nations were divided into their lands, everyone according to his tongue, according to their families, by their nations.

But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men built.

Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil. And now, he might reach out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”—

They did not know that Joseph understood them, for he spoke to them through an interpreter.

He removes speech from the trusted ones and takes away the understanding of the aged.

He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord ridicules them.

The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the people of no effect.

Confuse, O Lord, divide their tongues, for I have seen violence and strife in the city.

The Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who made the mute, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord?

You shall not see a fierce people any more, a people of unintelligible speech which no one comprehends, of a stammering tongue which no one understands.

Also I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here I am. Send me.”

Behold, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, says the Lord. It is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language you do not know, nor do you understand what they say.

Therefore if the whole church assembles in one place and all speak with tongues, and those who are unlearned or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?

The Lord will bring a nation against you from far away, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand,
