Ezra 10:6

Modern English Version

Then Ezra stood in front of the house of God and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib. When he arrived there, he ate no bread and drank no water because he was mourning over the vile unfaithfulness of the exiles.

Now while Ezra prayed and confessed, weeping and prostrating himself before the house of God, a very large congregation of men, women, and children gathered around him from Israel, for the people too wept bitterly.

They made a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem for all the children of the exile to assemble in Jerusalem.

Because of the vile behavior of those who had been in exile, everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel gathered to me, but I sat astonished until the evening sacrifice.

The Levites, as well as the priests, were recorded as the chiefs of the fathers’ houses in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, Johanan, and Jaddua during the reign of Darius the Persian.

Also, one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was a son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite, so I drove him away from me.

So, he had prepared a great chamber hall for him, where previously they had stored the contributions, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of grain, new wine, and fresh oil, as required, for the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the contribution for the priests.

Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brothers the priests, and they built the Sheep Gate. They sanctified it and erected its doors. From the Tower of the Hundred to the Tower of Hananel, they sanctified the wall.

After him Baruch the son of Zabbai zealously repaired another section, from the corner to the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest.

I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have esteemed the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.

My heart is stricken and withered like grass, so that I forget to eat my bread.

So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights. He did not eat bread or drink water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.

In that day the Lord God of Hosts called you to weeping and mourning, and to tear your hair and wear sackcloth.

I set my face toward the Lord God to seek by prayer and supplications with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

I fell down before the Lord, as at the first, forty days and forty nights. I did not eat bread or drink water because of all your sins which you committed, doing what was wicked in the sight of the Lord to provoke Him to anger.
