Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Oh, this people has committed a great sin and have made a god of gold for themselves.

You shall not make gods of silver alongside Me or make gods of gold for yourselves.

Indeed, all Israel has transgressed Your law, even by departing that they might not obey Your voice. “Therefore the curse has been poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the Law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against Him.

O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, to our officials, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against You.

On the next day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin, and now I will go up to the Lord. Perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.”

We have sinned and have committed iniquity and have done wickedly and have rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and from Your judgments.

You are righteous for everything that has come upon us! You have acted faithfully while we have done wickedly.

O  Lord God of Israel, You are righteous, for we who escaped exile yet remain to this very day. Behold, we stand before You in our guilt, for we should not stand before You because of this.”

So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights. He did not eat bread or drink water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.

You shall not make for yourself any graven idol, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water below the earth.

“Even when they had made themselves a molded calf and said, ‘This is your god that brought you out of Egypt,’ and committed terrible provocations,
