Exodus 22:7

Modern English Version

If a man gives his neighbor money or items to be kept for him, and it is stolen from the man’s house, if the thief is caught, he must repay double.

If the stolen item is in fact found alive in his possession, whether it be an ox, or donkey, or sheep, then he shall repay double.

If fire breaks out and catches in thorn bushes, so that stacked grain or the standing grain or the field are consumed, then he who started the fire must surely make restitution.

As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed. They, their kings, their officials, and their priests, and their prophets

You shall not defraud your neighbor or rob him. The wages of him who is hired shall not stay with you all night until the morning.

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

If a person sins and commits a trespass against the Lord by lying to his neighbor concerning something left in storage or entrusted to him, or about a theft, or if he has extorted from his neighbor,

or all that about which he has sworn falsely. He shall repay it in full and shall add one-fifth to it. He shall give it to whom it belongs on the day that he is found guilty.

He said this, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief. And having the money box, he used to steal what was put in it.

nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.
