So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.”

So Joshua laid low Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

Moreover, you shall choose out of all the people capable men who fear God, men of truth, hating dishonest gain, and place these men over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

Moses rose up with Joshua his attendant, and Moses went up to the mountain of God.

The Lord spoke to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend. When he returned to the camp, his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tent.

You must take this rod in your hand, with which you will perform the signs.”

The Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” And he said, “A rod.”

Moses took his wife and his sons and set them on a donkey, and he returned to the land of Egypt. And Moses took the rod of God in his hand.

Then Joshua the son of Nun, the assistant of Moses from his youth, said, “My lord Moses, forbid them.”

These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to explore the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

The Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him,

which our fathers, having received it, brought with Joshua into the land possessed by the Gentiles, whom God drove out in front of our fathers until the days of David,

Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he, with Joshua, the son of Nun.

For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have later spoken of another day.

The Lord said to Joshua, “Point toward Ai with the sword that is in your hand, for I will give it into your hand.” So Joshua pointed toward the city with the sword in his hand.

So Joshua and all the fighting men arose to go up to Ai. Joshua chose thirty thousand men, mighty men of valor, and sent them out at night.
