Exodus 17:2

Therefore the people contended with Moses and said, “Give us water so that we may drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you contend with me? Why do you test the Lord?”

But they soon forgot His works; they did not wait for His counsel,

but lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tested God in the desert.

They tested God in their heart by asking for the food they craved.

Again and again they tested God, and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

Yet they tested and provoked the Most High God, and did not keep His testimonies,

do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as on the day of Massah in the wilderness,

when your fathers tested Me; they tried Me, though they had seen My work.

So the people murmured against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?”

Then Moses said, “This will happen when the Lord gives you meat to eat in the evening and bread in the morning to satisfy, for the Lord hears your murmurings which you murmur against Him. And what are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against the Lord.”

He called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the contending of the Israelites, and because they tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us, or not?”

And they said to them, “May the Lord look on you and judge, because you have made our scent stink in the estimation of Pharaoh and in the estimation of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.”

But Ahaz said, I will not ask, nor will I tempt the Lord.

And now we call the proud blessed, for those who do wickedness are built up; they even test God and escape.”

All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and against Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “O that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or that we had died in this wilderness!

Because all those men seeing My glory and My signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted Me now these ten times, and have not listened to My voice,

The people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread or water, and our soul loathes this worthless manna.”

Jesus said to him, “It is also written, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”

The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.’ So he divided his estate between them.

Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”

Now then, why test God by putting a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?

Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”

Neither let us test Christ, as some of them also tempted and were destroyed by serpents.

You shall not tempt the Lord your God, as you tempted Him in Massah.

Also at Taberah and at Massah and at Kibroth Hattaavah you provoked the Lord to wrath.

where your fathers tested Me and tried Me and saw My works for forty years.

But the thing was evil in the eyes of Samuel, because they said, “Give us a king to govern us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord.
