Ecclesiastes 5:2

Modern English Version

Do not be quick to speak with your mouth, or be hasty to utter a word before God with your heart. For God is in heaven, and you are on the earth; therefore may your words be few.

Abraham answered and said, “Behold, I who am but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord.

Then he said to Him, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose there will be thirty found there?” Again He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak only once more. Suppose ten will be found there?” Then He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.”

Then this stone, which I have set for a pillar, will be the house of God, and from all that You give me I will surely give one-tenth to You.”

But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.

When words are many, sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise.

It is a snare for a man to devote rashly a thing as holy, and after making vows to reconsider his consecration.

The words from the mouth of a wise person bring favor, but the lips of a fool consume him.

The beginning of the words from his mouth are folly; so the end of his words are evil madness.

For a dream comes when there is a great burden, and a foolish voice when there are many words.

For when there is an abundance of dreams and futilities, then words increase too. Therefore it is God you should fear.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

Or when a person swears by speaking rashly with his lips to do evil or to do good, anything that a man may speak rashly by oath, and he did not realize it, but when he realizes it, then he has become guilty of any of these things.

But when you pray, do not use vain repetitions, as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their much speaking.

“Pray then in this manner: Our Father, who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name.

And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”

We all stumble in many ways. But if any man does not stumble in what he says, he is a complete man and able also to control the whole body.

Jephthah made a vow to the Lord, “If You will indeed give the Ammonites into my hands,
