For there is no lasting remembrance of the wise or the fool, seeing that in the coming days everyone will have been forgotten. How the wise dies just like the fool!

Then, the king lamented for Abner, saying, “Should Abner have died as a fool dies?

For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.

For he sees that wise men die; the fool and the stupid perish, and leave their wealth to others.

Will Your wonders be known in the darkness, or Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

Joseph died, as did all his brothers, and all that generation.

Now there rose up a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.

The wisdom of the prudent is to consider his way, but the folly of fools is deceit.

There is not a remembrance of the former things, and, moreover, there will not be a remembrance of the things yet to come, even by those who are yet to come.

A wise man has eyes in his head, but the fool continues in darkness. Moreover, I experienced that each one experiences the same event—death.

Then I said in my heart, “The same event that befalls the fool will also befall me. So to what advantage is my wisdom?” Then I said to myself, “This also is vanity.”

For what benefit is there for the wise over the fool? And what more does the poor man know who walks before others?

It is better to go to a house of mourning for a funeral than to go to a house of feasting for a celebration; for this is the destiny of all humanity; and the living should consider this in their heart.

Then I saw the wicked approaching. They would enter and leave the holy temple, and they were praised in the city where they did works. This also is vanity.

But a poor wise man was found in it, and he by his wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that poor man.

For the living know that they will die, but the dead do not know anything; they have no more reward, because the memory of them is forgotten.

Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another. The Lord listened and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the Lord and who esteem His name.

As it is appointed for men to die once, but after this comes the judgment,
