Then I said in my heart, “The same event that befalls the fool will also befall me. So to what advantage is my wisdom?” Then I said to myself, “This also is vanity.”

behold, I now do according to your words. Behold, I have given you a wise and an understanding heart, so that there has never been anyone like you in the past, and there shall never arise another like you.

I have seen everything that is done under the sun; and behold, everything is vanity and like chasing the wind.

I spoke in my heart saying, “I have been great and increased in wisdom more than anyone else who has been before me in Jerusalem, and my heart has observed great wisdom and knowledge.”

For in an abundance of wisdom is an abundance of frustration, and the one who increases in knowledge also increases in sorrow.

“Vanity of vanities,” says Qoheleth, “vanity of vanities! All is vanity.”

For there is no lasting remembrance of the wise or the fool, seeing that in the coming days everyone will have been forgotten. How the wise dies just like the fool!

For when there are many debating words, there is more vanity. What is the benefit to a person?

For what benefit is there for the wise over the fool? And what more does the poor man know who walks before others?
