A wise man has eyes in his head, but the fool continues in darkness. Moreover, I experienced that each one experiences the same event—death.

More to be desired are they than gold, yes, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

For he sees that wise men die; the fool and the stupid perish, and leave their wealth to others.

Their graves are their perpetual homes, their dwelling places to all generations, though they call their lands by their own names.

The wisdom of the prudent is to consider his way, but the folly of fools is deceit.

The sight of the discerning is toward wisdom, but the eyes of the fool are on the ends of the earth.

For there is no lasting remembrance of the wise or the fool, seeing that in the coming days everyone will have been forgotten. How the wise dies just like the fool!

For there is an event for people and an event for animals, one fate for them both; as one dies, so does the other; there is one breath for all of them. There is no advantage for people over animals, for everything is vanity.

Though the man may live a thousand years twice over, yet does not enjoy the good things, do not all go to the same place?

For what benefit is there for the wise over the fool? And what more does the poor man know who walks before others?

It is better to go to a house of mourning for a funeral than to go to a house of feasting for a celebration; for this is the destiny of all humanity; and the living should consider this in their heart.

Who is like a wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a matter? A person’s wisdom makes his face shine, and the harshness of his face is softened.

Again I observed under the sun that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to the skillful; but time and chance happen to them all.

So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength; yet the wisdom of the poor man is despised, and his words are not heard.”

But whoever hates his brother is in darkness, and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
