You must remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you, and to prove you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.

After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”

But the envoys came from the officials of Babylon who were sent to him to inquire about the sign that had been given in the land. God left him alone in order to test Hezekiah, to know what was in his heart.

And when he was distressed, he entreated the face of the Lord his God, and he greatly humbled himself before the God of his fathers.

And his prayer and how God received his entreaty, and all his sin and unfaithfulness, and the sites where he built high places and where he set up the Asherah poles and images before he humbled himself, behold, they are written in the sayings of Hozai.

yet You in Your great mercy did not forsake them in the wilderness: The pillar of the cloud did not depart from them by day, to lead them in the way, nor the pillar of fire by night, to light for them the way they should go.

that He might turn aside man from his purpose, and conceal pride from man.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits,

Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders; they did not remember the abundance of Your mercy, but rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.

to Him who led His people through the wilderness, for His mercy endures forever;

And he cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he had thrown it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. There He made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there He tested them.

The Israelites ate manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land. They ate the manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain amount every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not.

Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, so that the fear of Him may be before you so that you do not sin.”

The crucible is for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord is the tester of the heart.

The loftiness of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be brought low; the Lord alone will be exalted in that day;

They did not say, “Where is the Lord who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through and where no man lived?”

I am the Lord your God: Walk in My statutes, and keep My judgments, and do them.

It was I who brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.

Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and they will suffer for your fornications, until your corpses are in the wilderness.

“I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

and did not need anyone to bear witness of man, for He knew what was in man.

In the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, Moses spoke to the Israelites, according to all that the Lord had commanded him to give to them.

who went in the way before you, to find you a place to pitch your tents, in fire by night and in a cloud by day, to show you by what way you should go.

you must not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the Lord your God is testing you, to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

“For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the works of your hands. He knows your wanderings through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.”

I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandal has not worn out on your foot.

Remember the days of old, consider the years of previous generations. Ask your father, and he will show you; your elders, and they will tell you:

you shall not be afraid of them. You must surely remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt,

who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might prove you, to do good for you in the end.

knowing that the trying of your faith develops patience.

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

But He gives more grace. For this reason it says: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

in order that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tried by fire, may be found to result in praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,

I will put her children to death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the hearts and minds. I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.

so that through them I may test Israel and see whether or not they will keep the ways of the Lord, to walk in them as their fathers did.”

They were to test Israel, in order to know if they would obey the commandments of the Lord, which He commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
