Deuteronomy 27:2

Modern English Version

On the day when you cross over the Jordan into the land which the Lord your God is giving you, you must set up for yourself great stones, and cover them with plaster.

I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within them. And I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh,

For you will cross over the Jordan to go in to possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you, and you will possess it, and dwell in it.

And it must be, when you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance, and you possess it, and dwell in it,

Then Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying: Keep all the commandments which I am commanding you today.

Then you must write all the words of this law on them, when you cross over, so that you may enter into the land which the Lord your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord God of your fathers promised you.

Therefore, when you cross over the Jordan, you shall set up these stones, which I am commanding you today, on Mount Ebal, and you shall cover them with plaster.

Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the ordinances which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, so that you may observe them in the land which you are crossing over to possess,

Hear, O Israel! You are to cross over the Jordan today, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than you, great cities fortified up to heaven,

“Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people, ‘Prepare food, for in three days you will cross the Jordan to go to take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess.’ ”

When the entire people had completed crossing over the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua,

Then Joshua built an altar to the Lord God of Israel on Mount Ebal,

as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the Israelites. As is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, it was “an altar of uncut stones not shaped by iron tools.” They sacrificed burnt offerings to the Lord on it, as well as peace offerings.

There in the presence of the Israelites he wrote a copy of the Law of Moses on the stones.
