“Brothers and fathers, hear my defense that I now make before you.”

“When they bring you to the synagogues, rulers, and authorities, do not be anxious how you will answer or what you will say.

Therefore resolve in your hearts beforehand not to practice your defense.

“Brothers, sons of the family of Abraham, and those of you who fear God, the word of this salvation has been sent to us.

The Jews pushed Alexander to the front as the crowd prompted him. Alexander motioned with his hand, wishing to make his defense to the mob.

Paul looked at the Sanhedrin and said, “Brothers, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.”

“I answered, ‘It is not the custom of the Romans to deliver any man to die before he who is accused meets the accusers face to face and has the opportunity to make his defense concerning the charge brought against him.’

while he defended himself, saying, “Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar have I sinned at all.”

So as he made his defense, Festus said with a loud voice, “Paul, you are mad. Much learning is turning you to madness.”

After three days Paul called the leaders of the Jews together. When they had assembled, he said to them, “Brothers, having done nothing contrary to our people or the customs of our fathers, I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

He said, “Brothers and fathers, listen! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Harran,

who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, while their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them,

This is my answer to those who examine me.

Again, do you think that we are defending ourselves to you? We speak before God in Christ. We do all things, beloved, for your edifying.

For observe this very thing, which you became sorrowful in a godly way: What carefulness it produced in you, what vindication of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what intense desire, what zeal, what avenging of wrong! In all things you have proven yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

But the latter preach out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel.

It is right for me to think this of you all because I have you in my heart, since both in my imprisonments and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are fellow partakers of my grace.

At my first defense no one stood with me, but everyone forsook me. May it not be charged against them.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. Always be ready to give an answer to every man who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you, with gentleness and fear.
