When they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some scoffed. But others said, “We will hear you again concerning this matter.”

So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, “Get up, get out of this place, for the Lord will destroy this city!” But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.

But they continued to jest regarding the messengers of God, despising His word and making fun of His prophets until the wrath of the Lord came up against His people, until there was no remedy.

“But they all with one mind began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of land, and I must go and see it. I ask you to excuse me.’

The men who guarded Jesus mocked Him and whipped Him.

Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him. Then, dressing Him in a fine robe, he sent Him back to Pilate.

And the soldiers also mocked Him, coming to Him and offering Him sour wine,

‘Look, you scoffers, marvel and perish! For I will perform a work in your days which you will never believe, even if someone declares it to you.’ ”

Then some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, “What will this babbler say?” Others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods,” because he preached Jesus and the resurrection to them.

For He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by a Man whom He has appointed, having given assurance of this to all men by raising Him from the dead.”

So Paul departed from them.

Others mocking said, “These men are full of new wine.”

As he lectured about righteousness, self-control, and the coming judgment, Felix was afraid and answered, “For now, leave! When time permits, I will send for you.”

But they had disagreements with him about their own religion and about a Man named Jesus, who had died, but whom Paul asserted was alive.

Why is it judged incredible by you that God raises the dead?

But we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Greeks.

Now if Christ is preached that He rose from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?

We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are honorable, but we are despised.

For He says: “In an acceptable time I have listened to you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

Still others had trials of mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment.

Therefore let us go forth to Him outside the camp, bearing the reproach that He bore.
