David said to him, “Do not be afraid, for I will certainly show you kindness on account of Jonathan, your father. I will return to you every field of Saul, your father, and you will eat at my table perpetually.”

The men were afraid because they were brought into Joseph’s house. They said, “We have been brought in because of the money that was returned in our sacks the first time, so that he may seek occasion against us and fall upon us and take us for slaves with our donkeys.”

He said, “Be at peace; do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks. I had your money.” Then he brought Simeon out to them.

I gave to you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your arms, and I gave to you the house of Israel and Judah. If this were too little, I would have continued to do for you much more.

For all my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king. Yet you set your servant among those who eat at your table. What right do I have to cry out any more to the king?”

The king said to him, “Why do you still speak of your affairs? I say that you and Ziba shall divide the field.”

The king said to Barzillai, “Cross over with me and I will sustain you with me in Jerusalem.”

But the king spared Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul on account of the oath of the Lord that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

David said, “Is there still anyone left from the house of Saul to whom I may show kindness on behalf of Jonathan?”

You will work the ground for him—you, your sons, and your servants. You will bring in the produce so that the son of your master will have food to eat, but Mephibosheth, the son of your master, will always eat at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.

Ziba said to the king, “Everything that my lord the king has commanded his servant, your servant will do.” So Mephibosheth ate at the table of David like one of the sons of the king.

So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he ate continually at the table of the king. Now he was lame in both of his feet.

The king said, “Is there no one else from the house of Saul to whom I may show the kindness of God?” Ziba responded to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan who is crippled in both feet.”

“But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them eat at your table, for with such loyalty they supported me when I fled from your brother Absalom.

He changed his prison garments, and he ate food continually before him all the days of his life.

Even my own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, who ate of my bread, has lifted up the heel against me.

Therefore Jehoiachin changed his prison garments and continually ate meals before him all the days of his life.

Thus says the Lord of Hosts: Execute true justice, show mercy and compassion, every man to his brother.

Give us this day our daily bread.

so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and dine with him, and he with Me.

Fear the Lord; serve Him in truth with all your heart, and consider what great things He has done for you.

but you will not cut off your faithfulness from my house forever, even when the Lord has cut off each one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth.”

Remain with me. Do not fear, for the one who seeks my life seeks your life, but you are safe with me.”
