Then all of the people came to persuade David to eat food while it was still day. But David took an oath, saying, “May God do to me, and more also, if I taste food or anything else before the sun sets.”

They mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul, Jonathan his son, the people of the Lord, and the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.

The elders of his house stood beside him to rouse him from the ground, but he was not willing, nor would he consume food with them.

Your hands were not bound, and your feet were not put in fetters; as a man falls before the wicked, so you have fallen.” And all of the people continued to weep over him.

All of the people recognized this, and it pleased them, as everything that the king did was pleasing to all of the people.

May God do so to Abner, and more also, for as the Lord has sworn to David, this I will do for him,

so their valiant men rose up and carried the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons to Jabesh. They buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

Neither will men tear themselves for them in mourning, to comfort them for the dead; nor will men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or for their mother.

Groan silently. Make no mourning for the dead. Bind on your turban and put your shoes on your feet and do not cover your mustache and do not eat the bread of men.

You shall do as I have done. You shall not cover your mustache, nor will you eat the bread of men.

Then the Israelites went up and wept before the Lord until evening. They asked the Lord, “Should we advance and fight our brother-tribesmen the Benjamites again?” The Lord said, “Advance against them.”

Then all the Israelites, all the people, went up to Bethel where they wept and sat before the Lord. They fasted that day until evening and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.

Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord do thus to me, and worse, if anything but death separates you and me!”

He said, “What is the thing that the Lord has spoken to you? Do not hide it from me. Thus may God do so to you, and more also, if you hide from me a word out of all the things that He spoke to you.”
