2 Samuel 24:16

Modern English Version

When the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented from the calamity. He said to the angel who was annihilating the people, “Enough! Now stay your hand.” The angel of the Lord was at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him in His heart.

Gad came to David that day and said to him, “Go up and erect an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.”

David said on that day, “Whoever defeats the Jebusites, let him go through the water shaft to reach the lame and the blind, who are despised by David.” Therefore, it is said, “The blind and lame shall not come into the house.”

But he went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a juniper tree and asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough! Now, O  Lord, take my life, for I am not better than my fathers.”

On that night the angel of the Lord went out and struck one hundred and eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When others woke up early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.

So Solomon began to build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where He appeared to David his father, at the place that David established on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

So the Lord sent an angel and destroyed the mighty army, leaders, and officials in the camp of the king of Assyria. So the king returned in shame to his own land. When he entered the temple of his god, some of his sons fell on him there with the sword.

For the Lord will vindicate His people, and He will have compassion on His servants.

Let their way be dark and slippery, and let the angel of the Lord pursue them.

But He, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them. He often restrained His anger, and did not stir up all His wrath;

Return, O  Lord! How long? Have compassion on Your servants!

The blood shall be to you for a sign on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you when I smite the land of Egypt.

For the Lord will pass through to kill the Egyptians. And when He sees the blood upon the lintel and on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not permit the destroyer to come to your houses to kill you.

Then the Lord relented of the harm which He said He would do to His people.

Entreat the Lord, for there has been enough of God’s mighty thunder and hail, and I will let you go, and you shall stay no longer.”

You fought with them by banishing them, by driving them away. He has expelled them on the day of the east wind with His fierce wind.

For I will not contend forever, nor will I always be angry; for the spirit would grow faint before Me, and the souls whom I have made.

Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear the Lord and entreat the Lord, and the Lord relented of the disaster which He had pronounced against them? Thus we might procure great evil against ourselves.”

If you will still abide in this land, then I will build you up and not pull you down, and I will plant you and not pluck you up; for I will relent of the disaster that I have brought on you.

O  Lord, I have heard the report of You, and was afraid; O  Lord, revive Your work in the midst of the years! In the midst of these years make them known; in wrath remember mercy.

I will take away the bloodshed from its mouth, and the abominations from between its teeth. Even it will be a remnant for our God. It will be like a tribe of a clan in Judah, and Ekron like the Jebusites.

When He returned a third time, He said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give God the glory. And he was eaten by worms and died.

Neither murmur, as some of them also murmured and were destroyed by the destroyer.

This punishment which was inflicted by many on such a man is sufficient.

The people of Judah were not able to drive out the Jebusites living in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites live with the people of Judah in Jerusalem to this day.

However, the tribe of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites living in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites live with the tribe of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

When they were near Jebus, it was getting very late. The servant said to his master, “Come, let us turn aside to this Jebusite city and spend the night in it.”

“I regret that I have set up Saul to be king because he has turned back from following Me, and he has not carried out My words.” And it grieved Samuel, and he cried to the Lord all night.
