Abner called to Joab, “Must the sword consume forever? Do you not understand that a bitter taste will result in the end? How long will you refuse to command the people to withdraw from chasing their brothers?”

So David replied to the messenger, “Thus you shall report to Joab, ‘Do not allow this thing to dismay you, for the sword devours one as well as another. Sustain your attack against the city and bring it to ruin.’ Encourage him with this reply.”

Abner suggested to Joab, “Let the young men come forward and compete before us.” And Joab replied, “Let them come.”

Each one grabbed his opponent by the head and thrust his sword in his opponent’s side; so they fell down together. Therefore that place was called Helkath Hazzurim, which is at Gibeon.

“How long will it be until you put an end to words? Gain understanding, and afterwards we will speak.

O people, how long will you turn my glory into shame? How long will you love vanity and seek after lies?    Selah

The beginning of strife is like letting out water; so stop the contention before fighting begins.

but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured with the sword; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it.

The destroyers have come upon all high places through the wilderness, for the sword of the Lord shall devour from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land. No one shall have peace.

The sword slashes in their cities, consumes their oracle-priests, and devours because of their own counsels.

On the next day he appeared to them as they fought and tried to reconcile them in peace, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why do you wrong each other?’
