All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. And he said, “For I will go down into the grave mourning for my son.” So his father wept for him.

The child died on the seventh day, and the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child had died. They said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we would speak to him, but he would not acknowledge our voices. Now how can we say to him, ‘The child is dead’? He may do harm.”

Then all of the people came to persuade David to eat food while it was still day. But David took an oath, saying, “May God do to me, and more also, if I taste food or anything else before the sun sets.”

My heart is stricken and withered like grass, so that I forget to eat my bread.

Then the king went to his palace and passed the night fasting, and no instruments of music were brought before him. And his sleep fled from him.

But he refused and said, “I will not eat.” But his servants, and also the woman, urged him and he listened to them. So he arose from the ground and sat on the bed.
