A watchman was standing on the tower in Jezreel, and he saw the company of Jehu as he was coming and said, “I see a company.” And Joram said, “Take a horseman and send him to meet them, and let him say, ‘Is it peace?’ ”

Absalom fled. Now when the servant who was keeping watch looked up, and behold, many people were coming from the road behind him, around the hill.

Now David was sitting between the two gates when the watchman went up to the roof of the gate, to the city wall. He lifted his eyes and saw a man running by himself.

He said, “You know that the kingdom was mine and that all Israel viewed me as the king. However, the kingdom has become my brother’s, for it was given to him by the Lord.

So they took two chariots with horses, and the king sent them after the army of the Arameans, saying, “Go and see.”

When Jehu had returned to his master’s servants, one said to him, “Is all well? Why did this madman come to you?” And he said to them, “You know this man and his babble.”

Then Jehu rode in a chariot and went to Jezreel, for Joram lay there. Ahaziah king of Judah had come down to see Joram.

So the horseman went to meet him and said, “Thus says the king, ‘Is it peace?’ ” But Jehu said, “What have you to do with peace? Circle in behind me.” So the watchman reported, “The messenger came to them, but he is not returning.”

Then he sent out a second horseman, who came to them and said, “Thus says the king, ‘Is it peace?’ ” Again, Jehu said, “What have you to do with peace? Circle in behind me.”

His watchmen are blind; they all are ignorant; they all are dumb dogs, unable to bark; sleepers lying down, who love to slumber.

I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem, who shall never hold their peace day or night. You who remind the Lord, do not keep silent;

Samuel did that which the Lord spoke, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, “Do you come in peace?”

David left his things with the keeper of the equipment, and he ran to the battle line. And he went and greeted his brothers.
