2 Chronicles 36:17

Modern English Version

So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans from Babylon, who killed their young men with the sword at the house of their sanctuary. He did not spare a young man or virgin, old or aged. God gave all of them into his hand.

But they plotted against him, and at the command of the king they all stoned him in the court of the house of the Lord.

So the Lord brought on them the officials of the army of the king of Assyria. They captured Manasseh with hooks, and they bound him in bronze chains and led him to Babylon.

Thus says the Lord: Behold, I will bring disaster on this place and all who dwell in it, even all the curses that are written in the book that they read before the king of Judah.

Afterwards, our fathers provoked the God of heaven to wrath, so He gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this temple and carried the people away into Babylon.

Since the days of our fathers until this day, we have been in a great guilt. It is because of our iniquities that we, our kings, and our priests have been delivered—by the sword, by captivity, by spoil, and by being shamed—into the hand of the kings of the lands. This day is like that, too.

Have respect for the covenant, for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of violence.

O God, the nations have come into Your inheritance; Your holy temple have they defiled; they have laid Jerusalem in ruins.

Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces, and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children.

Therefore, I have profaned the princes of the sanctuary, and have given Jacob to the curse, and Israel to reproaches.

I was angry with My people; I have polluted My inheritance and given them into your hand. You did not show them mercy; on the aged you have laid your yoke very heavily.

Therefore thus says the Lord of Hosts: Behold, I will punish them. The young men shall die by the sword. Their sons and their daughters shall die by famine.

Both the great and the small will die in this land. They will not be buried; neither will men lament for them, cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them.

Therefore, deliver up their children to the famine and pour out their blood by the power of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children and become widows and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle.

The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Malkijah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying,

Afterwards, says the Lord, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people and such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their life. And he will strike them with the edge of the sword. He will not spare them or have pity or mercy.

Therefore thus says the Lord: Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it.

For thus says the Lord: Just as I have brought all this great calamity upon this people, so I will bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.

And the Lord has brought it and done according as He has said. Because you have sinned against the Lord, and have not obeyed His voice, therefore this thing has come upon you.

With you also I will break in pieces man and woman; and with you I will break in pieces old and young; and with you I will break in pieces the young man and the young woman.

“For death has come up into our windows; and has entered our palaces, to cut off the children from the streets, and the young men from the squares.”

They shall also bring up a company against you, and they shall stone you with stones, and thrust you through with their swords.

You, son of man, prophesy and say: Thus says the Lord God concerning the Ammonites and concerning their reproach, and say, The sword, the sword is drawn, polished for the slaughter, to cause it to consume that it may be like lightning,

Therefore, the Lord has kept the disaster in store and brought it upon us. For the Lord our God is righteous in all His works which He does, but we have not obeyed His voice.

Surely My words and statutes that I commanded to My servants, the prophets, did they not persuade your fathers? They turned back and said, “Whatever the Lord of Hosts planned to do to us according to our ways and deeds, so He has done to us.”

then I declare to you today that you will surely perish and that you will not prolong your days in the land which you are crossing the Jordan to go in and possess.
