So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain; it takes away the life of its owners.

He who is greedy of unjust gain troubles his own house, but he who hates bribes will live.

The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and the patient in spirit than the haughty in spirit.

Woe to the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower which is at the head of the fertile valley of those who are overcome with wine!

But they also have erred through wine and stagger from strong drink; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are confused by wine, they stagger from strong drink; they err while having visions, they stumble when rendering judgment.

For from the least of them even to the greatest of them, everyone is given to covetousness. And from the prophet even to the priest, everyone deals falsely.

Therefore I will give their wives to others, and their fields to those who shall inherit them. For everyone from the least even to the greatest is given to covetousness; from the prophet even to the priest everyone deals falsely.

Nor shall any priest drink wine when they enter the inner court.

Do not drink wine nor strong drink, you or your sons with you, when you go into the tent of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations,

If a man, going about vapidly and deceitfully, lies, “I will preach for you wine and beer,” he would be just the preacher for this people.

Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets practice divination for money. Yet upon the Lord they lean, saying, “Is not the Lord in our midst? Evil will not come upon us.”

Thus says the Lord: Regarding the prophets who mislead My people — the ones who have something to eat proclaim “Peace,” but if one does not feed them, then they prepare for war against him.

Who is there among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on My altar in vain? I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord of Hosts, nor will I accept an offering from your hand.

He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it ‘a den of thieves.’ ”

I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.

For such people do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own appetites, and through smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting.

Do not be drunk with wine, for that is reckless living. But be filled with the Spirit.

Now we exhort you, brothers, warn those who are unruly, comfort the faint-hearted, support the weak, and be patient toward everyone.

Likewise deacons must be honorable, not insincere, not given to much wine, not greedy,

Men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

who must be silenced, who subvert whole houses by teaching for dishonest gain things they ought not teach.

For an overseer must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not easily angered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not greedy for dishonest gain,

Likewise, older women should be reverent in behavior, and not be false accusers, not be enslaved to much wine, but teachers of good things,

to speak evil of no one, not to be contentious, but gentle, showing all humility toward everyone.

Let your lives be without love of money, and be content with the things you have. For He has said: “I will never leave you, nor forsake you.”

Where do wars and fights among you come from? Do they not come from your lusts that war in your body?

Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, take care of them, not by constraint, but willingly, not for dishonest gain, but eagerly.

And in their greed they will exploit you with deceptive words. Their judgment, made long ago, does not linger, and their destruction does not slumber.

Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily after the error of Balaam for a reward, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.

I, John, both your brother and companion in the persecution and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the isle that is called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.

But his sons did not walk in his way, for they followed after unlawful gain, and they took bribes, and they perverted justice.
