And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. And Israel went out to battle against the Philistines and they made camp beside Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.

The next year Ben-hadad assembled the Arameans and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.

But the rest fled into the city of Aphek, where a wall fell on twenty-seven thousand of the men who were left. And Ben-hadad fled and came into the city into an inner chamber.

Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;

Today all of you stand before the Lord your God, the heads of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Israel,

the king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one;

Also remaining in the south is all the land of the Canaanites, Arah owned by the Sidonians, as far as Aphek at the Amorite boundary,

Janim, Beth-tappuah, Aphekah,

Ummah, Aphek, and Rehob: twenty-two cities and their villages.

But you have today rejected your God, who saves you from all your troubles and your distresses. And you have said to Him, ‘No, but set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes, and by your clans.”

Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek, and the Israelites were camping by the spring which is in Jezreel.

The Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am doing something in Israel which will make both ears ring of everyone who hears it.

The Philistines arrayed themselves in a battle line against Israel, and when the battle was over, Israel was beaten before the Philistines, who struck down on the field of battle about four thousand men.

Now the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.

Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen. And he called its name Ebenezer saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”
