A proclamation went throughout the army as the sun was setting, saying, “Every man is to return to his city, and every man is to return to his own country.”

So the king arose and took his seat in the gate, and the people were all told, “Behold, the king is sitting in the gate.” So all the people came before the king, but the Israelites had fled, each to his tent.

So when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people responded to the king, saying, “What portion do we have in David? We also do not have an inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel, and see to your own house, David!” So the people of Israel departed to their tents.

“Thus says the Lord: You shall not go up, nor fight against your brothers the Israelites. Every man is to return to his house, for this thing is from Me.” They listened therefore to the word of the Lord and turned to depart, according to the word of the Lord.

And he said, “I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep without a shepherd, and the Lord said, ‘These have no master. Let every man return to his own house in peace.’ ”

But the king of Aram ordered his thirty-two commanders who had control over his chariots, saying, “Fight neither against small, nor great, but only against the king of Israel.”

The battle intensified that day, and the king was propped up in his chariot against the Arameans and died that evening, and the blood ran out of the wound into the floor of the chariot.

So the king died and was brought to Samaria, and they buried him there.

Judah was beaten before Israel, and every man fled to his tent.

At that time, the Israelites departed from there each man to his tribe and to his family. They went out from there to their own inheritance.

So the Philistines fought and Israel was beaten. And they fled every man into his tent. It was a very great defeat, for there fell of Israel thirty thousand foot soldiers.
