They took the bull which was given to them, and they prepared it and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “O Baal, hear us.” But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one bull for yourselves and prepare it first, for there are many of you, and call on the name of your god, but do not light a fire underneath.”

By noon, Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry out loud, for he is a god. Either he is talking or is gone away or is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and needs to be awakened.”

So they gathered them together in heaps, and the land stank.

And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know. And the God in whose hand is your breath, and whose are all your ways, you have not glorified.

Then the sailors were afraid, and each cried to his god. They tossed the ship’s cargo into the sea in order to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down into the hold of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep.

What profit is a carved image when its maker has carved it, a cast image, and a teacher of lies, that its maker trusts in what he has shaped when he makes mute idols?

Woe to him who says to the wood, “Awake!” To the silent stone, “Arise!” Can it teach? It is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in it.

On that day I will punish all who step over the threshold, who fill their masters’ houses with violence and deceit.

But when you pray, do not use vain repetitions, as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their much speaking.

You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to mute idols, however you were led.

So concerning the eating of foods that are offered in sacrifice to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one.

When the Ashdodites arose early in the morning, behold, Dagon had fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord. And they took Dagon and set him in his place again.
