At that point, the king got some advice and made two golden calves and said to the people, “It is too difficult for you to go up to Jerusalem. Behold, your gods, O Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.”

He shall give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam who sinned and who led Israel to sin.”

Judah did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the people provoked Him to jealousy with the sins they committed, even worse than their fathers had done.

When he became king, Baasha killed all the house of Jeroboam. No one from Jeroboam’s family was left breathing. He completely destroyed them, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke by His servant Ahijah the Shilonite,

because of the sins of Jeroboam which he sinned and which he made Israel sin, by his provocation with which he provoked the Lord God of Israel to anger.

He did evil in the sight of the Lord and walked in the way of Jeroboam and in his sin with which he made Israel to sin.

But Omri did evil in the eyes of the Lord and did worse than all who preceded him,

Ahab the son of Omri did more evil in the sight of the Lord than all who were before him.

The sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat were seen as minor for him to walk in, for he took Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians, as his wife and went and served Baal and worshipped him.

Ahab made an Asherah and did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel who preceded him.

He went back and rebuilt the high places that Hezekiah his father had destroyed. He erected altars for Baal, made an Asherah pole as Ahab king of Israel had done, and worshipped all the host of heaven and served them.

However, the Lord did not turn from the fierceness of His great wrath, by which His anger was kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations with which Manasseh had provoked Him.

Nevertheless he clung to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin. He did not depart from them.

And he set for himself priests for the high places and for the goat and calf idols that he made.

He even made his sons pass through the fire in the Valley of Ben-hinnom; and he had conjurers, and practitioners of divination and sorcery, and necromancers, and mediums. So he did a great amount of evil in the eyes of the Lord, so that God was provoked.

They captured unassailable cities and a fertile land. They possessed houses full of all goods, wells dug, vineyards, olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance, so they ate, were filled, and became fat, and they indulged themselves in Your great goodness.

“Nevertheless they became disobedient, and rebelled against You, and cast Your law behind their backs, and killed Your prophets who had warned them to turn back to You. But they committed terrible provocations.

Thus they provoked Him to anger with their deeds, and a plague broke out among them.

For you hate instruction, and cast My words behind you.

How often they provoked Him in the wilderness and grieved Him in the desert!

Yet they tested and provoked the Most High God, and did not keep His testimonies,

For they provoked Him to anger with their high places and moved Him to jealousy with their graven images.

You shall make no molded gods for yourselves.

You show lovingkindness to thousands, and recompense the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them, O great and mighty God. The Lord of Hosts is His name,

The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to other gods, that they may provoke Me to anger.

Yet they did not listen to Me, nor incline their ear, but hardened their neck. They did worse than their fathers.

Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you have forgotten Me and cast Me behind your back, now bear the punishment of your lewdness and your harlotries.

Then He said to me, “Have you seen this, O son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here? For they have filled the land with violence and have continually provoked Me to anger. And behold, they put the branch to their nose.

He stretched out the form of a hand and took me by a lock of my head. And the Spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heavens, and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court, where the seat of the image of jealousy was, which provokes to jealousy.

Do not turn to idols, nor make for yourselves cast metal gods: I am the Lord your God.

Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?

They have made Me jealous with that which is not God; they have provoked Me to anger with their empty things. And I will make them jealous of those who are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

You have been rebellious against the Lord from the day I knew you.

They were choosing new gods, and warfare was at the city gates, but not a shield or spear was to be seen among forty thousand in Israel.
