For the vngodly maketh bost of his owne hertes desyre, the couetous blesseth him selfe and blasphemeth the Lorde.

How longe shall all wicked doers speake so disdaynfully, and make such proude boastynge?

and I wyll saye to my soule: Soule thou hast muche goodes layde vp in store for many yeares: take thyne ease, eate, drinke, and be mery.

But thou Sennaherib, whom hast thou defyed & blasphemed? And agaynst whom hast thou lyfted vp thy voyce, & exalted thy proude lokes? euen agaynst the holy one of Israel.

They that forsake the lawe, prayse the vngodly: but such as kepe the law abhorre them.

They that put their trust in their good, & boast theym selfes in the multitude of theyr ryches.

They gape vpon me with their mouthes, saying: there, there: we se it with our eyes.

Thou destroiest the lyers: the Lord abhorreth the bloude thursty and disceatful.

Haue I put my truste in goulde? Or haue I sayde to the fynest gould of all: thou art my confidence?

so that when he heareth the wordes of this curse, he blesse him self in his hert saying: I shall haue peace. I wyll therfore worke after the luste of myne owne hert, that the droncken may perysh with the thyrstye.

The enemye sayd: I wyl folowe and ouertake them, & wyll deuyde the spoyle: I wyll satysfye my lust vpon them: I wyll drawe my swerde, & myne hande shal destroy them.

Se that ye loue not the world, neyther the thynges that are in the worlde. Yf anye man loue the worlde the loue of the father is not in him.

Go to nowe ye that saye: to daye, and to morowe let vs go into suche a cytye and contynue there a yeare and bye and sel, and wynne:

Mortifie therfore, youre members whiche are on the earth, fornicacion, vnclenes, vnnatural, lust euil concupiscence, and couetousnesse, which is worshippinge of Idolles,

For this ye knowe, that no whormonger, other vncleane persone, or couetous person, whyche is the worshypper of Images, hath anye inheritaunce in the kyngdome of Christe and of God.

neither theues, neythe couetous, neither dronkardes, neither cursed speakers, neither pyllars, shall inherete the kyngedome of God.

Whyche men though they knewe the ryghtuousnes of God, howe that they which such thinges commit, are worthy of death, yet not onely do the same, but also haue pleasure in them that do them.

beyng ful of al vnryghtuous doing, of fornicacion, wickednes, couetousnes, maliciousnes, full of enuye, murther, debate, disceite, euyl condicioned, whisperers,

Wherfore, he sayde vnto them: take hede, and beware of coueteousnes. For no mannes lyfe standeth in the abundaunce of the thynges whiche he possesseth.

Wo vnto hym, that couetouslye gathereth euyll gotten goodes into hys house: that he maye set hys neste an hye, to escape from the power of mysfortune.

Neuertheles, as for thyne eyes & thine herte, they loke vpon couetousnesse, to shede innocent bloude, to do wronge and violence.

I am wroth with him for his couetousnes and lust, I smyte him, I hyd me, and am angry, when he turneth him selfe, & foloweth the by the waye of his owne herte.

To the chaunter, an exortacyon of Dauid when Doeg the Edomite came to Saul, and shewed hym, sayinge: Dauid is come to the house of Ahimelech. Why boastest thou thy self, thou Tyrraunt, that thou canste do myschiefe? Wher as the goodnesse of God endureth yet dayly.

Whyle he lyueth, he is counted an happy man: and so long as he is in prosperitie, men speake good of hym.

Then sayd Saul: Blessed are ye in the Lorde: for ye haue compassion on me.

And when the Lord sawe it, he was angry bicause of the prouokyng of hys sonnes and daughters.

And I wyll destroy your alters bylt vpon hye hylles, and ouerthrow youre images and caste youre carkasses vpon the bodyes of your idolles, and my soule shall abhorre you.

But nowe ye reioyce in youre bostynges. All suche reioysing is euyl.

which sayde vnto his mother, the eleuen hundred syluerlinges that were taken from the, about which thou cursedst and saidest in myne eares: Beholde the syluer is wyth me for I toke it awaye. Then sayd his mother: blessed be thou my sonne, in the Lord.

These .ij. things also haue I considered in the tyme of vanytye: that the iust man perisheth for hys ryghtuousnes sake, and the vngodly lyued in hys wickednesse.
