Matthew's Bible 1537

When they couet to haue lande, they take it by vyolence, they robbe men of their houses. Thus they oppresse a man for his house, & euery man for hys heretage.

Wo be vnto you that ioyne one house to another, & bring one land so nyghe vnto another, tyll ye can get no more grounde. Wyll ye dwel vpon the earth alone?

Heare this, O ye that oppresse the poore, and destroye the nedy in the lande, saying:

Neuertheles, as for thyne eyes & thine herte, they loke vpon couetousnesse, to shede innocent bloude, to do wronge and violence.

he greueth the poore & nedy: he robbeth and spoiled: he geueth not the detter his pledge againe he lyfteth vp his eyes vnto Idols, & medleth with abhominable thinges:

For couetousnes is the rote of all euyll, whiche whyle some lusted after, they erred from the faythe and tangled them selues wyth manye sorowes.

Wo be vnto you Scribes and Phariseis, hypocrites, for ye shut vp the kyngdome of heauen before men: ye youre selues go not in, neyther suffer ye them that come to enter in.

I wil come and punish you, and I my selfe will be a swyf wytnes against the witches, agaynst the aduouterers, agaynste false swearers: yea, and agaynst those, that wrongeouslye kepe backe the hyrelinges dewtye: which vexe the widdowes and the fatherlesse and oppresse the straunger, and feare not me, sayeth the Lord of Hostes.

O heare this ye rulers of the house of Iacob, and ye iudges of the house of Israell: ye that abhorre the thynge that is laufull, and wrayst asyde the thynge that is streyght.

yea gyftes haue bene receyued in the, to shede bloude. Thou haste taken vsury and encreace, thou haste oppressed thy neyghbours by extorcion, and forgotten me, sayeth the Lorde God.

I haue sene yesterdaye the bloude of Naboth and of hys sonnes, sayde the Lord, and I wyl quyte him in thys grounde, saythe the Lorde. Now therfore take and cast hym in the plat of grounde accordynge to the worde of the Lorde.

Thou shalt not couet thy neighbours house neither shalt couet thy neighbours wyfe, his man seruaunt, his mayde, his oxe, his asse or oughte that is hys.

But yf case be that my lande crye againste me, or that the forowes therof make any complainte:

After these thynges were done, it chaunced that Naboth the Iezrahelite had a vyneyard in Iezrahel harde by the palace of Ahab kynge of Samaria.

And he sayde vnto me: hast thou sene this, thou sonne of man? Thyncketh the house of Israel, that it is but a tryflle, to do these abhomynacyons here? Shulde they fyll the lande full of wyckednesse, & vndertake to prouoke me vnto anger? Yea and purposelye to caste vp their noses vpon me:

Beholde, I haue smitten my handes vpon thy couetousnesse, that thou hast vsed, and vpon the bloude whyche hath bene shed in the.

Ye leane vpon youre sweardes, ye worcke abomynacyon, euery one defyleth hys neghbours wyfe: & shall ye then possesse the lande?

The prince also shall take none of the peoples enherytaunce, ner put them from their possessyon: but to his owne sonnes shall he geue hys possessyon, that my people be not scatred abrode, but that euerye man maye haue hys owne.

They treade vpon poore mens heades, in the duste of the earthe, & croke the wayes of the meke. The sonne and the father go to the harlot, to dyshonoure thy holye name,

amonge those that be full of ryches vnryghtuously gotten: where the cyte syns deale with falshede, speake lies, & haue dysceytfull tunges in their mouthes?

The Lorde shall come forth to reason wyth the Senatours and prynces of hys people, and shal saye thus vnto them: It is ye that haue burnt vp my vyneyarde, the robberye of the poore is in your house.

Thus sayeth the Lord God: O ye prynces, ye haue now oppressed and destroyed ynough: now leaue of, handle now accordyng to the thing, that is equall and lauful: and thrust out my people nomore, sayeth the Lorde God.

O heare thys worde ye fat kyne, that be vpon the hil of Samaria: ye that do poore men wronge, and oppresse the nedy: ye that saye to your Lordes: bring hyther, let vs drincke.
