Therfor thus sayth the Lord: For so much as thys people draweth nye me with theyr mouthe, and prayseth me hyghlye wyth theyr lyppes (where as theyr herte neuerthelesse is farre from me, & the feare which they owe vnto me, that turne they to mens lawes and doctrynes)

In vayne they worship me, teachynge doctrines whyche are nothyng but the commaundementes of men.

neyther geue hede to fables and genealogyes whiche are endelesse, & brede doubtes more then Godlye edifiynge whiche is by fayth:

and not takyng hede to Iewes fables and commaundementes of men that turne from the truethe.

Be not caryed aboute wyth dyuerse and straunge learnynge. For it is a good thynge that the herte be stablyshed wyth grace, and not with meates, whiche haue not profyted them that haue had theyr pastyme in them.

Wylt thou vnderstande (O thou vayne man) that fayth without dedes is dead?

And Dauid sayde: in vayne haue I kept all that this felowe had in the wildernesse, so that nought was myssed that pertayneth vnto him, for he hath quytte me with euyll for good.

But whatsoeuer I commaunde you that take hede ye do: & put nought thereto nor take therfrom.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vayne, for the Lord wil not hold him giltlesse that taketh his name in vayne.

Shoulde I then clense my herte in vayne (thougt I) and washe my handes in innocency?

Yea euery man walketh as it were a shadow, and disquieth him selfe in vayne: he heapeth vp ryches, and can not tell to whome he gathereth them.

And so youre labour shall be spent in vayne. For your land shal not gyue hyr encrease, neyther the trees of the land shal gyue their fruites.

then I wyll do this agayne vnto you: I wyl viset you with vexacions, swellinge & feuers, that shall make your eyes dasel, & wt sorowes of herte. And ye shall sowe your seede in vayne, for youre enemyes shall eate it.

I testifye vnto euerye man that heareth the wordes of the prophesye of thys boke. Yf any man shall ad vnto these thynges, God shall adde vnto him the plages that are written in thys boke.

Ye haue sayed. Is it but lost labour, to serue God? What profyt haue we for keping his commaundementes, and for walkinge humbly before the Lorde of Hostes?

by whiche also ye are saued: I do you to wit, after what maner I preached vnto you yf ye kepe it, except ye haue beleued in vaine.

And he called the people vnto hym, & sayd to them, heare and vnderstande.
