Therfor thus sayth the Lord: For so much as thys people draweth nye me with theyr mouthe, and prayseth me hyghlye wyth theyr lyppes (where as theyr herte neuerthelesse is farre from me, & the feare which they owe vnto me, that turne they to mens lawes and doctrynes)
Be not caryed aboute wyth dyuerse and straunge learnynge. For it is a good thynge that the herte be stablyshed wyth grace, and not with meates, whiche haue not profyted them that haue had theyr pastyme in them.
And Dauid sayde: in vayne haue I kept all that this felowe had in the wildernesse, so that nought was myssed that pertayneth vnto him, for he hath quytte me with euyll for good.
then I wyll do this agayne vnto you: I wyl viset you with vexacions, swellinge & feuers, that shall make your eyes dasel, & wt sorowes of herte. And ye shall sowe your seede in vayne, for youre enemyes shall eate it.
I testifye vnto euerye man that heareth the wordes of the prophesye of thys boke. Yf any man shall ad vnto these thynges, God shall adde vnto him the plages that are written in thys boke.
Ye haue sayed. Is it but lost labour, to serue God? What profyt haue we for keping his commaundementes, and for walkinge humbly before the Lorde of Hostes?
