For Ihon Baptyste came, neyther eatinge breade nor drincking wyne, and ye saye: he hath the deuyll.

For he shalbe greate in the syght of the Lorde, and shall neyther drinke wyne nor stronge drinke. And he shalbe fylled with the holy ghost, euen in his mothers wombe:

Iohn was clothed with camylles heare, & with a gerdyll of a skyn about hys loynes. And he dyd eate locustes, and wilde honey,

Other mocked them sayinge: they are full of newe wyne.

& many of them sayd: he hath the deuil, and is madde: why heare ye hym?

Then sayed the Iewes to hym. Nowe knowe we that thou haste the deuyll. Abraham is dead, and also the Prophetes, and yet thou sayest, yf a man kepe my saiynges he shall neuer tast of death.

Then answered the Iewes, and sayd vnto hym: Saye we not well that thou arte a Samaritane, and hast the deuyll?

This Ihon had his garmente of Camels hear & a girdel of a skinne about his loynes. His meate was locustes, & wilde honye.

It is ynough for the discyple to be as his master is, and that the seruaunt be as hys Lorde is. If they haue called the good man of the house him selfe belzebub: how muche more shal they call them of his housholde so?

In those dayes Iohn the Baptist came and preached in the wyldernes of Iury

They are lyke vnto chyldrin syttyng in the marcked place, & cryenge one to an other, and saiynge: We haue pyped vnto you and ye haue not daunsed: we mourned to you, & ye haue not wept.

The sonne of man is come and eateth and drincked, and ye saye: beholde a man which is a glotten, and a drincker of wine, a frende of publicans and synners.
