Matthew's Bible 1537

He put forth this similitude: A certayne man had a fygge tree planted in hys vyneyarde, & he came and sought frute theron, and founde none.

Ye haue not chosen me, but I haue chosen you and ordeyned you, that ye go & bringe forth frute, and that your frute remayne, and that whatsoeuer ye shall axe of the father in my name, he shoulde geue it to you.

But the frute of the spiryte, is loue, ioye peace, longe sufferynge, gentylnes, goodnes, faithfulnes,

where as I planted the out of noble grapes & good rotes. How art thou turned then into a bitter, vnfrutefull, and straunge grape?

not that I desire gyftes, but I desire aboundaunte frute on youre part.

Moreouer I wyll gather them in (sayth the Lorde) so that there shall not be one grape vpon the vyne, neyther one fygge vpon the fygge tree, and the leaues shalbe plucte of. Then wyll I cause them to departe, & saye:

Now also is the axe lyed vnto the rote of the trees, so that euery tree which bringeth not forth good frute shall be hewen doune, and cast into the fyre.

I tell you naye: But excepte ye repente, ye shal al lykewyse peryshe.

And the fygge tree aunswered them, shuld I forsake my swetnes & my good frute, & shuld go to be promoted ouer the trees.
