I sawe amonge the spoyle a goodlye Babylonyshe garment, and two hundred sicles of syluer, and a tonge of golde of fyftye sicles weyghte: and I coueted them, and I toke them. And beholde they lye hydde in the earthe in my tente and the syluer there vnder.

Then when luste hath conceyued, she bringeth forth sinne, & sinne when it is fynyshed bryngeth forthe death.

Mortifie therfore, youre members whiche are on the earth, fornicacion, vnclenes, vnnatural, lust euil concupiscence, and couetousnesse, which is worshippinge of Idolles,

For this ye knowe, that no whormonger, other vncleane persone, or couetous person, whyche is the worshypper of Images, hath anye inheritaunce in the kyngdome of Christe and of God.

So that fornicacion and vncleanes, or couetousnes be not ones named amonge you, as it becommeth sainctes:

For there is nothynge couered the shall not be vncouered: neyther hydde, that shall not be knowen.

Wo vnto hym, that couetouslye gathereth euyll gotten goodes into hys house: that he maye set hys neste an hye, to escape from the power of mysfortune.

Wo be vnto them that seke to depe, to hyde theyr ymagynacion before the Lorde, which reherse theyr councels in the darcknes, & saye: who seyth vs, or who knoweth vs?

For ye comforte youre selues thus: Tushe, death & we are at a poynte, and as for hell, we haue made a condicyon with it, that thoughe there breake out anye sore plage it shall not come vpon vs. For wyth disceyte wyll we escape, and with nymblenes wil we defende oure selues.

Loke not thou vpon the wyne, how redde it is, & what a coloure it geueth in the glasse

Kepe thyne herte wyth all dilygence, for there vpon hangeth lyfe.

I made a couenaunt with mine eyes, that I woulde not loke vpon a damosell.

Thou shalt not couet thy neighbours house neither shalt couet thy neighbours wyfe, his man seruaunt, his mayde, his oxe, his asse or oughte that is hys.

And the begynnyng of hys kyngdome was Babell, Erech, Achad, & Chalne in the lande of Synear:

And when these lepers came to the edge of the hoste, they wente into a tente, and dyd eate and dryncke, and caryed thence syluer, goulde and raymente, and wente and hydde it, and came agayne, and entred into another, & caryed thence also, and wente, and hyde it.

Then came the sonnes of Iacob vpon the dead, & spoyled the city, bicause they had defyled theyr syster:

These are the ways of all suche as be couetous, that one wolde rauish anothers life.
